I’m used to it by now… Normally called Organized Chaos, describes fairly well the usual state of my desk. At home and at home.

Taken from my work place, a beautiful rainbow over the Tejo river sharing the focus with the green plant on my desk.

The themes presented in this blog are naturally evolving along with my day-by-day experiences. The last days (or should it be months) have been completely occupied with software developments tasks known as implementation, implementation, and more implementation… I must admit that C/C++ has become my second language.
Closely associated with source code production come the fine “art of debugging”. My favorite debugger is GDB (from The GNU Debugger Project).
Learning something new every day is somewhat of a life’s philosophy for me, and it is with big enthusiasm that I learn more about using GDB. The last example of a lesson learned was: how to use backtrace command to display the trace of the execution stack (which was not new to me), and navigate that same stack using the up and down commands and verifying the parameters passed to each function.
More details can be found in the Program Stack section of the GDB Quick Reference.
Some time ago, during one of many futile discussions with my colleagues, the differences between being considered a geek, a nerd or a dork had the focus of attention. After a significant amount of babbling, someone (a.k.a. yours truly…) opened Firefox, and googled the following definitions:
- “Dork is a term used to describe someone who has unusual interests and is, at times, silly and stupid. [...] The term occasionally implies stupidity, [...] and it can paradoxically imply an unadmirable (bookish, academic) intelligence“ in Wikipedia
- “The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.” in Wikipedia
- “Nerd is a term often bearing a derogatory connotation or stereotype, that refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests that are age inappropriate rather than engaging in more social or popular activities.” again, from Wikipedia
And still, the discussion continued… In fact, all the above expressions are very similar forms of describing people who have somehow different interests from the overall population.
This being said, I proudly consider myself a geek (not a dork nor a nerd… and let’s not discuss this again)!
This post is a statement of my complete addiction to TV series, specially the ones produces in north america. Currently, the focus of this addiction is mainly Lost, but that just because other series like House MD, Numbers, Criminal Minds, Dexter amongst other are on break.
The main reason to this addiction is the lack of interesting Portuguese productions. From my point of view, the national productions (known as “telenovelas”) are directed to a specific public, which include only the lonely old ladies and the brainless. [Sorry if this offends you, but it's my opinion. Sue me.]
The stupid aspect of it all is that, some Portuguese channels do show the series that interest me, but in schedules that are less than adequate! Sometimes, this series are shown well after 2 AM.
Indeed, the advent of BitTorrent is welcomed!
